Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations meet for final Yukon Forum of 2018

Joint news release with the Council of Yukon First Nations and Yukon First Nations governments

Yukon’s Premier, Cabinet members and Yukon First Nations Chiefs met today in Whitehorse for the fourth Yukon Forum of 2018.

Leaders discussed a range of issues and initiatives, including fish and wildlife, corrections, child welfare, land use planning and a newly-created Joint Senior Executive Committee made up of Government of Yukon Deputy Ministers and Yukon First Nations Executive Directors.

The leaders also announced that they will be conducting a joint review of the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board. The review will evaluate the board’s role in supporting the sustainable and collaborative management of fish and wildlife in the territory.

Our meeting today focused on the progress being made through the Yukon Forum working groups on issues such as child welfare, corrections and land use planning. The Joint Senior Executive Committee will allow for closer collaboration as we continue to implement our Joint Priority Action Plan, and the review of the Fish and Wildlife Management Board will ensure we continue to manage Yukon’s fish and wildlife effectively and sustainably.

Premier Sandy Silver

The new Joint Senior Executive Committee is progressive and unique to the Yukon. It ensures the priorities of self-governing Yukon First Nations receive executive-level attention on a regular basis.
