We promote the appreciation of visual arts in Yukon by putting artwork in public spaces. We run art competitions for public buildings, parks and other spaces. These opportunities will be posted below as they open.

Welcome to Yukon gateway sign call for artwork proposals

About the project

The Department of Tourism and Culture invites Yukon artists to submit proposals for original artwork designs for Welcome to the Yukon gateway signs at various locations around the territory. The signs will showcase Yukon artists and their artwork, while adding artistic flair to the unique landscape and welcoming visitors to the Yukon. This call is an opportunity for artists to visually express what it means to live in the Yukon.

202425 Tourism Banners

The 2024–25 Tourism Banners call for proposals is now closed.

About the project

The Department of Tourism and Culture invites Yukon artists to submit proposals of original artwork design concepts. These designs will appear on the 202425 Tourism Banners.

Since 2018, the Tourism Banner program has shared many ways in which Yukon has captured the hearts of artists. The depictions welcome visitors with vibrant energy and unique northern imagery. Starting in spring of 2024, the next set of Tourism Banners will offer a fresh take on Yukon’s charm. They will be up for 2 years.

Past competition: Yukon Archives 50th Anniversary Artist-in-Residence Program 2023

About the project

The Yukon Archives invites Yukon artists to apply to its Artist-in-Residence Program. This 9-week residency is part of the celebrations commemorating the Yukon Archives’ 50th anniversary. Through this unique residency, artists will be able to experience the various materials, facilities and services the Yukon archives have to offer.

Who can apply

We encourage applications from professional and emerging artists from varying disciplines or practices. We accept artistic collaborations and joint residency applications.

We cannot support large-scale performances at this time.

Past competition: Call for interest – artwork for the new skate park in Whitehorse

The artwork for the new skate park in Whitehorse call for interest is now closed.

About the project

The Infrastructure Development Branch would like to invite Yukon artists to participate in the 1st part of a 2-stage selection process to develop a piece of weather-proof public artwork for Whitehorse’s new skate park. This project is an opportunity for an artist or team to design a piece of public artwork that will be installed as the centrepiece and spiritual core of the park. The commissioned piece will sit atop the volcano feature and will be a focal point of the area. Following the theme of “The River, the Artwork” will be commissioned by this call for interest to the public followed by a request for proposals.

The artwork must be of a scale that will be clearly visible, between 2 metres and 4 metres high.

Past competition: Gender-Inclusive Washroom Mural

The Gender-Inclusive Washroom Mural call for proposals is now closed.

About the project

There is a new multi-user gender-inclusive washroom at the Yukon Visitor Information Centre in downtown Whitehorse. The mural project aims to set a tone of inclusivity and acceptance. Individual artists and teams were invited to submit proposals for the mural.
