Poor visibility from smoke has caused a closure of the North Klondike Highway between Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing.

The Wrong Lake fire (MA-006) is a 100 hectare out of control fire located near kilometre marker 512 on the North Klondike Highway. The fire is approximately 20 km south of Stewart Crossing

Highways and Public Works are working closely with Wildland Fire Management and the North Klondike Highway is now closed between kilometre 463 and kilometre 534.

The fire was designated being held after it was actioned by airtankers and ground crews on June 19. Due to to difficult fire conditions in the Northern Tutchone region it has quickly grown beyond resources and returned to out of control status. The fire has now moved south to the highway and an assessment is taking place to consider response options. No structures are currently at risk.

Weather conditions are anticipated to moderate over the weekend, which is expected to lessen fire activity and should allow the highway to reopen safely.

Yukon Protective Services will continue to provide updates. Visit wildfires.service.yukon.ca to see the locations, size and control status of all Yukon wildfires.
