XY-008 wildfire north of Lake Laberge causing smoky conditions on Yukon River

A wildfire burning north of Lake Laberge on the Thirty Mile section of the Yukon River is causing smoky conditions.

The Mt. Lewis (XY-008) wildfire is located approximately 10 kilometres north of Lake Laberge. The wildfire is burning on both sides of the Yukon River, with most of the activity on the northwest shore.

With the recent hot, windy weather, the wildfire has become more active and is putting out more smoke. Paddlers and other river users should expect flames and heavy smoke. Plan ahead and use caution. If an area is smoky, the best time to travel near a big wildfire is early morning and late evening. Fire activity generally slows down with cooler overnight temperatures.

Smoky haze may also be seen in Whitehorse due to this wildfire. This fire is burning in the wilderness zone in the Whitehorse district, and is not threatening any properties or infrastructure. We are providing a monitored response to this wildfire, where officials keep track of the fire for potential social disruption or other major impacts as it fulfills its natural ecological role. If you have concerns about wildfire smoke, talk to your healthcare professional or call Healthline at 811. You can find more information about wildfire smoke online here.

The XY-008 wildfire was initially reported on June 19, 2024 and is now 2,946 hectares in size. It is near to the CA-020 wildfire in the Carmacks district, another wilderness zone fire.
