Wildland Fire Management is planning to start annual prescribed burns next week in the Whitehorse area. Burning could begin as early as Monday, April 29.
These operations are carefully planned and take place during specific weather conditions. Spring prescribed fire operations are one way that Wildland Fire Management strategically reduces fire risk near communities.
Locations planned for burning include:
- Range Road, south of Whistle Bend
- Trails south of Porter Creek
- Long Lake Road, northwest and across the river from Whistle Bend
- The Alaska Highway weigh scales
- The Robert Service Boulevard right-of-way
- Camp Boyle, near Mary Lake
- North of the Takhini neighbourhood, across from the Kopper King restaurant
During a prescribed burn, people should expect to see emergency vehicles in the area. When burning grassy areas, smoke can be visible but is usually light and short-lived. Wildfire crews are patrolling the site with enough resources to put the burn out if conditions become unsafe.
Wildland Fire Management will announce specific burning operations as they take place on Yukon Protective Services social media and, where appropriate, directly to community members who might see the operation.
