Register a new vehicle

Bring the following documents to any Yukon Motor Vehicles office to register your new vehicle.

  1. New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS);
  2. Signed and dated bill of sale; and
  3. Valid insurance.

Register a used vehicle

Bring the following documents to any Government of Yukon Motor Vehicles office to register a used vehicle.

  1. Signed and dated bill of sale;
  2. A copy of the previous owner's registration; and
  3. Valid insurance.

Register a salvaged vehicle

Bring the following documents to any Government of Yukon Motor Vehicles office to register a salvaged vehicle.

  1. Signed and dated bill of sale;
  2. Valid insurance; and
  3. A mechanical inspection form performed by a licensed mechanic indicating that the vehicle is roadworthy.

You must make every effort to have the proper documents that tie the previous registered owner to your purchase. Contact any Government of Yukon Motor Vehicles office to check if your documentation is acceptable.

Register a vehicle from outside of the Yukon

There are 2 options to register a vehicle from outside the Yukon. You can use the licence plate from a vehicle you own or you can register via fax.

Take the licence plate from a vehicle you own that's registered in the Yukon

  1. Bring a licence plate and the registration belonging to it with you when you go to purchase your vehicle.
  2. Get a completed bill of sale.
  3. Get a copy of valid insurance on your new vehicle faxed or emailed to you.
  4. Put your plate on the vehicle and drive it to the Yukon. You must register your vehicle within 14 days from the date on the bill of sale.

Register your newly purchased vehicle by fax

  1. Get a completed bill of sale.
  2. Get the vehicle insured and get a faxed or emailed copy of your valid insurance.
  3. Let us know you will be faxing the documents. Email motor.vehicles@gov.yk.ca or phone: 867-667-5315 or toll-free in the Yukon, the NWT and Nunavut: 1-800-661-0408, extension 5315
  4. Submit the documents by faxing 867-393-6220.
  5. One of our staff will contact you to make arrangements for you to get your licence plate.

Register an imported vehicle in the Yukon

Bring the following documents to any Government of Yukon Motor Vehicles office to register an imported vehicle.

  1. Original, completed Vehicle Import Form issued by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.
  2. Valid insurance.
