What the fire danger ratings mean

We rate the fire danger rating to show how dangerous a fire would be if it started. A higher fire danger rating means more dangerous conditions.

Know the danger ratings in your area. Do not start fires in dangerous conditions.

Low

  • Fires may start easily and spread quickly.
  • There will be minimal involvement of deeper forest fuel layers or larger fuels.
  • Burn permits may be activated through your local Wildland Fire Management office.

Moderate

  • Forest fuels are drying.
  • There's an increased risk of surface fires, carry out any forest activities with caution.
  • Burn permits are suspended.

High

  • Forest fuels are dry and the risk of wildfire is high.
  • New fires may start easily and actively burn. Use lots of caution during any forest activities.
  • Burn permits are suspended.

Extreme

  • Forest fuels are very dry and fire risk is very serious.
  • New fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts.
  • Burn permits are suspended.

Fire restrictions

The Government of Yukon and Yukon municipalities can restrict the use of open fire.

During wildfire season, we might have to limit public fire use because of extreme wildfire danger or several major wildfire operations happening at once. The system’s 3 levels of temporary reduced fire use support normal fire-season burning rules.

This system balances community safety with responsible fire privileges so we can enjoy fire safely while reducing the number of preventable human-caused wildfires.

Fire restriction levels

There are 3 different levels of fire restrictions:

  • Level 1: all fire use is suspended.
  • Level 2: cooking and warming fires are only allowed in the provided fire pits and stoves at road-accessible territorial and commercial campgrounds.
  • Level 3: cooking and warming fires are only allowed in fire pits or other purpose-made containers.

How fire restrictions are implemented

The Yukon forest supervisor restricts fire use under the Forest Protection Act. Yukon is a large place, and conditions can be different in different regions. For that reason, we put fire restrictions in place by region instead of the whole territory.

How you can help

Fire restrictions are only a part of wildfire prevention. You should always be aware of risky hot, dry or windy conditions.
