Statement from Deputy Premier McLean and Minister Mostyn on the Yukon Native Hockey Tournament

Deputy Premier Jeanie McLean and Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn have issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, we are pleased to recognize the 44th annual Yukon Native Hockey Tournament, which kicks off today.

“The tournament has been held since 1973 and is arguably the largest and most enduring made-in-Yukon event. That inaugural tournament saw players like John Flynn, Danny Joseph, Roy Johnson, Tommy Taylor, Jim Bob Titus and the Farr brothers lead the Dawson City Sluicers to a first-ever tournament win.

“Since then, the Yukon Native Hockey Tournament has become a highlight of the North's sporting circuit and an important weekend for people from all over Turtle Island to gather, reconnect with old friends and enjoy the spirit of the competition.

“Last year, the tournament made its return after being on ice for three years because of the pandemic. We are overjoyed to have it back in all its glory, and I know the business community is especially pleased to welcome the additional economic activity the tournament provides.

“The 2023 tournament saw the introduction of the first-ever Women’s division, which will feature again in 2024 and include six teams.

“The Government of Yukon is proud to support this year’s event. In total, 1,129 hockey players are expected in Whitehorse for the tournament. That equates to 56 teams, including 31 from Yukon communities, 14 from B.C. and 11 from the Northwest Territories. Along with the players, we expect thousands of tournament fans!

“The reach of this tournament is remarkable, and we welcome the visiting teams and supporters to the territory. With so many visitors coming, we recognize the tremendous amount of work that goes into this event. Thank you to the Yukon First Nation Hockey Association and the many other volunteers for your dedicated work on making this tournament happen.

“We encourage Yukoners to take in one of the many hockey games this weekend or attend the opening ceremony this evening where players are drummed into the arena and get to show their Nation colours. The coveted Harry Allen Leadership Award and the Most Dedicated Hockey Mom awards will also be given out.”
