Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke and Minister of Education Jeanie McLean have issued the following statement:
“Like many jurisdictions across Canada, the Yukon has experienced a shortage of school bus drivers. Transportation to and from school is a big part of day-to-day education for Yukon students and making sure they get there and back safely is a key priority for our government.
“In an effort to address these shortages, we have successfully tested five new school bus drivers for their Class 2 licence since late fall 2023. These drivers are now fully licensed and ready to support the safe transport of students.
“Providing a secure means of travel not only alleviates concerns for parents and guardians but also promotes a sense of security and routine for the students.
“There is no backlog of school bus drivers awaiting testing and the current demand for school bus driver road tests has been met.”
