Statement from Minister of Education Jeanie McLean on the School Board trustee elections

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

 “Thank you to all the candidates who were nominated in the recent school board and council elections for the First Nation School Board, commission scolaire francophone du Yukon and the Whistle Bend Elementary School Council. It is promising and exciting to see Yukoners have such enthusiasm to be involved in the community and our educational system. 

“This was the inaugural election to elect trustees to the First Nation School Board. Every step in establishing the First Nation School Board is a historic step in advancing reconciliation. I would like to thank the First Nation School Board Interim Governance Committee for their leadership over the past nine months. 

“Dr. Alyce Johnson, Erin Pauls, Jocelyn Joe-Strack, Mark Wedge, Melanie Bennett, and Kirk Cameron were appointed to the Interim Governance Committee in February this year. They have worked extensively to launch the First Nation School Board and ensure a successful start to the school year for teachers and students moving to the school board. 

 “I am excited for the next chapter of the First Nation School Board with the newly elected trustees. 12 candidates ran for five elected positions with the First Nation School Board. Congratulations to Shadelle Chambers, Erin Pauls, Dana Tizya-Tramm, Jocelyn Joe-Strack and Gillian Staveley on being elected to the First Nation School Board. 

“Six candidates ran for five elected positions with the commission scolaire francophone du Yukon. Congratulations to Jean-Sébastian Blais, Jessica Masson Guerette, Myriam Bougie, Véronique Maggiore and Jesse Cooke on being elected to the commission scolaire francophone du Yukon. 

“Five candidates were nominated and elected by acclamation for five elected positions to establish the Whistle Bend Elementary School Council. Congratulations to Tia Campbell, Cassandra Malach, Brian Laird, Andrea Oldridge and Rebecca Hutchings-Archibald.

 “Thank you to all who voted and to Elections Yukon for administering these general elections and delivering successful, fair and accessible elections in our territory. 

 “This is an exciting time for education in the territory, and I look forward to seeing the work of the trustees and council members as they work with their schools in delivering equitable and quality education to Yukon learners.”
