Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). This day, held each year to celebrate people with disabilities, promotes their rights and wellbeing and increases awareness of their experiences in society.

“The theme this year is “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities”. This theme serves as a reminder that working towards a society that is fully inclusive of persons with disabilities is a collective responsibility.  

“According to the World Health Organization, an estimated one in six people experience a significant disability. Here in the Yukon, as of November 1, 2023, the Department of Health and Social Services’ Disability Services Unit had 263 children and 147 adults receiving services.  

“Our government is committed to supporting the safety, health and wellbeing of Yukoners living with disabilities. Living with a disability can pose significant challenges and can also be a source of strength and uniqueness.

“Many services provided by the Government of Yukon support persons with disabilities, including Yukon Home Care, Long Term Care, Disability Services and Student Support Services. We remain committed to expanding the support available to those impacted by a disability in alignment with the recommendations in the Putting People First report and best practices.

“Thank you to all Yukoners who work to break down barriers and open doors for the people they serve.”
