Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee on International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day and Month

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“September 9 is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder – FASD – Awareness Day, and throughout this month, we come together to raise awareness about FASD and its impact on individuals, families and our communities. This year's theme, Everyone Plays a Part, is a powerful reminder that everyone in our community has a role in supporting healthy pregnancies and creating safe, equitable spaces for people with FASD.   

“FASD results from alcohol use during pregnancy and is a lifelong disability that can cause a variety of challenges to physical health, learning, attention, communication and social skills. Despite more than 1.5 million Canadians living with FASD, it is still often misunderstood or the diagnosis is unknown. This is why it is important that we support healthy pregnancies and have open, compassionate conversations about the risks of alcohol use during pregnancy with friends and family to raise awareness. 

“Our government remains committed to supporting the safety, health and wellbeing of Yukoners living with FASD. The Yukon’s FASD Action Plan guides our way forward in building a system that better supports families, and caregivers while developing preventive programs, all delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.

“We will continue to work alongside Yukon First Nations, FASD Interagency Advisory Committee and community health partners to help prevent FASD and ensure the Yukon’s FASD initiatives are appropriate, accessible and responsive to the needs of all Yukoners. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank these community organizations for the important work they do every day. 

“As Yukoners we can all help contribute to creating a supportive community for those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and promoting healthy pregnancies. September 9 from 12 to 2:30pm Yukoners can attend the FASD Awareness Barbecue. This free event is at Shipyards Park, with entertainment and refreshments served. "Throught this month, I encourage all Yukoners to learn more about our work to prevent FASD, support those living with FASD,  and take a moment to ask, ‘how can I play a part in my community?’
