Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee on World Tuberculosis Day

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“As we observe World Tuberculosis Day this Sunday, we focus on deepening our understanding of tuberculosis, its spread and how we can collectively work towards its eradication.

“Tuberculosis, despite being preventable and treatable, continues to impact millions worldwide. We are steadfast in our commitment to combating this global health issue. Our efforts are not only focused on treatment but also on prevention and education.

“We understand that tuberculosis is not just a medical challenge but also a social one, linked to factors such as poverty, housing and access to quality health care.

“Our government continues to deliver quality tuberculosis screening and treatment services, particularly in remote and vulnerable communities. We are working closely with health care professionals, community leaders and organizations to ensure tuberculosis services are accessible to all, regardless of location or background.

“The current status of tuberculosis in the Yukon is closely monitored by the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Yukon Communicable Disease Control. All new or suspected infections are reported to them immediately after they are identified.

“While active tuberculosis disease in the Yukon is relatively rare compared to global figures, each case is taken seriously, with efforts focused on prevention, early detection and treatment.

“I extend my gratitude to health care professionals and community partners for their relentless work in tuberculosis care and control. Their dedication is vital in our journey towards a tuberculosis-free world."
