Statement from Minister John Streicker on World Tourism Day

Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“Since 1980, World Tourism Day has been held every September 27 in recognition of the impact the tourism sector has around the globe.

“As the summer tourism season draws to a close and the fall and winter seasons begin, World Tourism Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the significance of this industry for the Yukon. Tourism is more than an economic contributor. Tourism enables us to share our pride in our communities, experiences, heritage and the stories of our special territory with people from around the world. Tourism contributes meaningfully to Reconciliation.

“The United Nations World Tourism Organization’s theme this year is Tourism and Green Investments. This theme highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for people, for planet and for prosperity. This theme is fitting and appropriate as it reinforces the our government’s commitments in the Yukon Tourism Development Strategy and the Yukon Sustainable Tourism Framework, as well as Our Clean Future: A Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and a green economy.

“This World Tourism Day – and all year long – let’s celebrate the people, experiences, communities and events that make our corner of the world such an incredible place for a thriving and responsible tourism sector. Let’s continue to support tourism-related initiatives and activities that are regenerative and sustainable for Yukon residents, visitors and the planet.”
