Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean and Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee have issued the following statement:
“Today, we saw many Yukoners join together and show their support for our youngest 2SLGBTQIA+ community members.
“To the Yukon’s transgender community, allies and advocates, we say ‘thank you'. Your dedication and unwavering care in protecting our communities’ rights to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the right to security and safety, is respected and deeply valued.
“There is no space for hate in the Yukon. We are deeply troubled by the actions of some who want to deprive trans children of the ability to feel safe, loved and respected at school, at home and in their communities. Every child deserves love and acceptance, regardless of their gender identity. All children deserve to feel valued for who they are and who they will become.
“Our government was honoured to stand beside 2SLGBTQIA+ Yukoners, friends, families and allies in a demonstration of support today. Together, we made it clear: there is no space for hate in our territory.
“To our 2SLGBTQIA+ community, know this: the Government of Yukon stands with you. We are consistently working to improve inclusion in our programs and services, guided by the LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan. We are now more than halfway through this five-year plan, with 70 items either completed or underway.
“We are proud of our continued efforts to implement the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity – SOGI – Policy in Yukon schools. This policy includes details about safe spaces, contacts, activities and organizations that promote equality and non-discrimination in Yukon schools.
“The safety and wellbeing of every student in our schools is crucial. By engaging the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate in a review of our SOGI Policy, we are taking a thoughtful and informed approach to ensure our schools are welcoming spaces for everyone. This review is not just about policy; it reaffirms our commitment to every child’s right to a safe and inclusive education.
“As we prepare to mark Gender Equality Week in the Yukon, starting September 22, this is an opportunity to recognize the fundamental human rights we all deserve and stand in solidarity with Yukoners of all genders.
“This Gender Equality Week, we invite all Yukoners to embrace gender equality. Together, let’s continue building a Yukon where everyone, of all genders, feels valued and celebrated.
“Our government will never stop standing up for a diverse, inclusive and resilient territory.”
