Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:
"The Yukon stands with the global community to mark World Pneumonia Day, observed every year on November 12. Across the world, pneumonia is one of the leading infections of children and adults – and Canada is no exception.
“Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and other kinds of exposure. Early treatment can save lives. We can prevent it with some vaccines and treat it based on the cause.
“Our government is committed to creating a person-centred health care system that meets the needs of all Yukoners. As a part of this commitment, we strive to ensure that all Yukoners are informed about the causes, prevention and treatment of common illnesses like pneumonia.
“I encourage all Yukoners to understand the disease, get vaccinated and seek early treatment if symptoms such as cough, fever and shortness of breath appear. Support local health campaigns and, where possible, wear a pearl ribbon to show solidarity and raise awareness.
“Prioritizing your own health is a fundamental step toward safeguarding the wellbeing of your entire community, creating a ripple effect of positive impact on those around you.”
