Statement from Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee regarding the death of RCMP Constable Rick O’Brien

Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the death of Constable Rick O’Brien, who served as an officer of the Ridge Meadows RCMP in British Columbia.

“Constable O’Brien was a well-respected member of the RCMP, whose passing left a profound impact on his colleagues and his community.

“This loss is heightened due to our close relationship with British Columbia and the numerous family, work and community connections that we share between our jurisdictions.

“The RCMP plays an integral role not only in law enforcement but in crime prevention, investigations, assistance with emergency situations and community activities.

“It is extremely concerning to see the high number of recent police deaths in Canada – a growing problem we must all confront together.

“Police members face many potential risks when on duty; however, the increase in violence against police officers in Canada should concern us all.

“As a community, we stand behind the RCMP and other police and public safety officers facing these risks to keep our communities safe.

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend my deepest condolences to Constable O’Brien’s family, friends, colleagues and the RCMP.”
