Statement from Premier Pillai and Minister Mostyn on the National Day of Mourning

“This Sunday, April 28, Yukoners and people throughout Canada pause to pay respect to those who have died and those who have suffered injury or illness due to a work-related incident.

“On this date, we renew our steadfast commitment to health and safety in the workplace.

“Last year in the Yukon, 687 workers were injured on the job, and of those 380 workers required time away from the workplace to recover. Sadly, in the Yukon, there has been one workplace fatality in 2024. Our deepest condolences go out to their family, friends and colleagues.

“These injuries and their profound effects reach beyond the workplace, into the hearts and homes of our communities. We must continue to work together to do our part so that every worker comes home safe at the end of the day.

“We hope all Yukoners will join this year’s Day of Mourning ceremony at the Workers’ Memorial at Shipyards Park or online through the Yukon Federation of Labour’s Facebook page and on the YFL website.”
