Statement from Premier Pillai on Canada Day

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“This Monday, July 1, across the country and here in the Yukon, Canadians are joining together to celebrate Canada Day.

“Canada Day is an opportunity to celebrate our unity, diversity and what makes our country one we can all be proud to call home.

“Since July 1, 1868, this day has been a time for all Canadians to come together and reflect on what it means to be Canadian, to take pride in our heritage, and to celebrate our vibrant cultures.

“The Yukon, as part of the broader country, embodies many of the qualities and values that make Canada special.

“This summer, I had the honour of attending the D-Day commemoration and met with veterans. Hearing their stories firsthand was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many, including our brave Yukoners, who fought valiantly for the freedoms we cherish today. On this Canada Day, we honour their dedication and bravery, and we recommit ourselves to upholding the values they fought for.

“Canada Day is also an opportunity to remember where we came from and recognize how the past has shaped the Yukon and beyond. Since time immemorial, this land has been home to Yukon First Nations who continue to shape the future of our territory. As part of Canada Day, it is our collective responsibility to reflect on our role and advance reconciliation. This is how we commit ourselves to an inclusive society and a safe, thriving Yukon for future generations.

“This weekend, I encourage Yukoners and all Canadians to reflect on the many reasons to celebrate our country and be proud as Canadians.

“As we celebrate, let’s remember to do so responsibly, respecting each other and the land we call home. Let us come together as Yukoners and Canadians, united by our shared values and a vision for a strong, resilient future. Let us unite to honour our past, celebrate our diversity, and cherish the Yukon as an incredible part of our country.

“Happy Canada Day, everyone!”
