Statement from Premier Pillai on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Every year on August 9, we observe International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which promotes the rights and needs of Indigenous Peoples while celebrating Indigenous communities and knowledge.

“Reconciliation is a journey, not a destination, and today provides an opportunity to look back at our progress and recognize the path that still lies ahead. The path to reconciliation is one that we must walk together.

“Like the rest of Canada, the Yukon has been home to Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial. Colonialism has had devastating and enduring consequences on ways of life, rights and self-determination. Today, we acknowledge the perseverance and strength of the individuals, families and communities who felt and continue to feel the impacts of colonialism. In the Yukon, across Canada and around the world, we must continue to make progress towards advancing reconciliation, including by recognizing and upholding Indigenous rights.

“This year’s theme highlights the significant contributions of Indigenous youth in shaping a brighter future for their communities and the world. Across the Yukon, there are many incredible examples of First Nations youth leading the way in advocating for self-determination and actively shaping the destiny of their communities, with their initiatives and actions making a global impact.

“On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, let us celebrate Indigenous peoples everywhere and continue to promote reconciliation and self-determination in the Yukon and beyond.”
