Statement from Premier Pillai on the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“On this National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia, we commemorate the lives lost seven years ago today in the violent, hate-fuelled attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy, QC. Yukoners express our unwavering solidarity with the Muslim community here in the Yukon, across Canada and around the world.

“We remember the innocent victims, six people who lost their lives and 19 others who were seriously injured, who were targeted solely because of their faith. Today, I am thinking of Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzedine Soufiane and Aboubaker Thabti, and extending my deepest sympathies to their families and friends, and to the entire Muslim community affected by this senseless act of violence.

“As we reflect on this solemn occasion, we must not only mourn the lives lost too soon but also recommit ourselves to fostering a culture of inclusivity, understanding and respect for diversity. We must actively challenge and dismantle stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination that fuel hatred and intolerance.

“It is crucial that Yukoners stand united against Islamophobia, reaffirming our dedication to building a society where every individual can practise their faith freely and without fear. Education, awareness and open dialogue are essential tools in combating prejudice and fostering a climate of acceptance.

“On this National Day of Remembrance, let us collectively pledge to take meaningful action against Islamophobia, advocating for a world where the principles of equality and respect guide our interactions with each other.”
