Statement from Premier Pillai on Rosh Hashanah

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“This evening at sunset, Jewish communities across Canada and around the world will begin celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

“Rosh Hashanah is a two-day observation and celebration marking the beginning of the 10-day High Holidays before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This period is a time for introspection, to reflect on the previous year and to seek reconciliation in preparation for the year to come.

“Rosh Hashanah falls on the first and second day of the Hebrew month Tishri, and this Rosh Hashanah, Jewish communities will celebrate the start of year 5784 on the Hebrew calendar. Jewish communities, families, and friends will gather together to pray, share traditional foods such as apples dipped in honey and round challah bread, sound the shofar and exchange best wishes for the year ahead.

“The Yukon’s Jewish community is represented by the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon (JCSY). This year, the JCSY members will gather to hold a barbecue to celebrate and welcome the year 5784. I hope all those who attend – and all Jewish people who observe Rosh Hashana across the Yukon – have a good and sweet new year.
