Statement from Premier Ranj Pillai on Small Business Month

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“October is Small Business Month, which includes Small Business Week from October 15 to  21. This represents a national opportunity to recognize the achievements of Canadian entrepreneurs and celebrate the many contributions of small businesses to the economy and to our communities.

“Here in the Yukon, the positive impacts of our small business community cannot be overstated. It is especially important that we take this time to recognize their hard work.

“The last few years have been challenging ones for small businesses. The pandemic saw concerns about health and safety and limited tourism to territory. The global economy post-pandemic has seen labour shortages, concerns around public safety, inflation and high interest rates. While these challenges are not limited to the Yukon, they hit small businesses especially hard.

“Of the over 3,000 businesses in the Yukon, the vast majority are classified as small businesses. They play a vital role in creating jobs and driving economic growth, while working hard to provide quality goods and services to their neighbours. Small businesses also do a lot to help others who live nearby in several ways, such as sponsoring and participating in community events, donating to local causes and supporting local sports teams.

“Yukoners are always open to supporting local entrepreneurs because of the clear benefits they provide, increasing the availability of resources in the territory and helping to build up their home communities. I encourage all Yukoners to continue supporting local businesses this Small Business Month and year-round.

"I would also like to remind entrepreneurs of the variety of resources available to small businesses in the Yukon. I recommend that they reach out to the Department of Economic Development or visit Yukon.ca to explore those options.”
