Statement from the Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ranade on the holidays

"With the holiday season upon us and respiratory illnesses circulating in the territory, it’s important to put into practice everything we have learned over the past two years to reduce the spread of illness and make personal choices about how we manage our own risk.

“The best way to protect yourselves, children and loved ones from respiratory illnesses is to get vaccinated. Appointments can be made by visiting yukon.ca/appointments or calling your local health centre. Vaccination is the best protection against severe illness, including hospitalization and death.

“During the holidays there will be an increase in the number of social gatherings where respiratory illnesses may spread through close contact with friends and family. Although this presents a risk of transmission, socializing with loved ones also provides both physical and mental health benefits. I encourage Yukoners to balance their own needs and risks when deciding whether to attend or host a social gathering.

“Yukoners are reminded to stay home when they are sick, consider an outdoor event if the weather permits, gather in smaller groups, wash your hands often, and to wear a mask if you are feeling unwell and need to leave your home to get essential items such as medication and groceries.

“If you are planning on gathering with people who are vulnerable or elderly, please postpone your visit if you are feeling unwell and respect their comfort level around socializing.

“We have been through a lot over the course of the pandemic and I want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. I hope that you’re all able to connect with those that mean the most to you, whether it’s in person or virtually.”
