Get a commercial periodic motor vehicle inspection

Commercial vehicles must be inspected through the National Safety Code's Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection Program (PMVI) to make sure they are safe. All Canadian jurisdictions recognize each other's PMVI inspections. Visit the National Safety Code (NSC) website to learn more.

What needs to be inspected?

You are required to have your vehicle and any associated trailers inspected if:

  • you operate outside Yukon and your carrier and goods have a combined weight of over 4,500 kilograms;
  • you operate inside or outside Yukon and your carrier and goods have a combined weight of over 11,794 kilograms; or
  • you operate a passenger-carrying vehicle that seats 10 or more passengers, including the driver.

How often is an inspection required?

The following vehicles must be inspected every 6 months:

  • trucks;
  • truck-tractors; and
  • passenger-carrying vehicles that seat 10 or more passengers, including the driver.

Heavy trailers must be inspected every 12 months.

What is involved for periodic inspections?

The PMVI inspections follow the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators Standard 11B.

Inspections are:

  • performed by certified technicians; and
  • located at private inspection facilities that are licensed and monitored by the Government of Yukon.

National Safety Code inspectors do periodic reviews of inspection facilities and their practices.

How to get an inspection

  1. A list of inspection facilities is available from the NSC office. It is also posted at the Whitehorse and Watson Lake weigh scales.
  2. Contact an inspection facility to make an appointment.
  3. The PMVI inspector fills out an inspection report for your vehicle.
  4. A copy of that report is given to:
    • you;
    • the inspection facility; and
    • the NSC office.
  5. Fees vary depending on the facility.
