Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations meet in Carcross for Yukon Forum

Joint news release with the Council of Yukon First Nations and Carcross/Tagish First Nation

Yukon’s Premier, Cabinet members and First Nations Chiefs met today at the Carcross Learning Centre for the 2nd Yukon Forum of 2018.

Today’s discussions revolved around working together to improve educational outcomes for First Nations students, as well as closer collaboration on environment matters. Fish and wildlife will be added to the Joint Priority Action Plan for ongoing discussion and collaboration through the Yukon Forum.

With each meeting of the Yukon Forum our conversations are deepening. We are discussing challenging issues, and are working together to identify areas for further collaboration. Today we spoke about improving the way we work together regarding education and the environment. Officials from all of our governments are working hard to advance our shared priorities.

Premier Sandy Silver

Education and the environment are critical issues for Yukon First Nations. We’re encouraged by today’s discussions and we look forward to increased collaboration with the Government of Yukon on this additional joint priority.

Council of Yukon First Nations Grand Chief Peter Johnston

We are pleased to welcome everyone in our Traditional Territory and happy to host the Yukon Forum at our new Learning Centre. As a government, we are mandated to protect the environment and education for our future generations and discussing these matters is critical to us. Carcross/Tagish First Nation has raised the possibility of a First Nations school and how we can increase the graduation rates of our First Nations youth.
