What is sexualized assault?
Sexualized assault is any form of sexual contact without your consent. You may have been sexually assaulted if you've been kissed, fondled or forced to have sexual intercourse against your will. Sexualized assault is a crime, and it's never your fault.
What is consent?
Consent means freely giving permission through words or actions. If something happens against your will, you did not give your consent. Consent cannot be given by someone who's:
- intoxicated;
- unconscious; or
- otherwise considered incapable of giving their consent.
Sexualized assault includes:
- Being touched in a sexual way without your permission.
- Being forced to touch someone for a sexual purpose.
- Being forced into a sexual act, including being threatened with harm.
- Sexualized contact with youth and children under the age of consent.
- When someone abuses their position, trust, power or authority to initiate sexual contact.
- When you withdraw consent and sexual activity continues.
What if you used alcohol or drugs?
Sexualized assault includes when someone attempts sexualized contact with you, without your consent when you've passed out after:
- consuming alcohol and other substances; or
- being encouraged to consume alcohol and other substances.
This also includes:
- having your drinks spiked; or
- being lied to about the content or type of substance you're consuming.
It can happen to people of all genders and all ages.
If any of the above has happened to you, you may have experienced sexualized assault. Sexualized assault can have a strong negative effect on physical and mental health. If you would like to talk to someone about it or to access services, phone the
