Apply for a post-secondary bursary to study in French

French First Language student

French as a Second Language student

The French as a Second Language (FSL) post-secondary bursary can help pay your school expenses while studying in French during your post-secondary studies.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • be either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • be a Yukon resident.
  • be attending full-time or part-time post-secondary studies.
  • be attending for a minimum of 12 weeks.

Your program of study may be on campus or through distance learning.

For those studying to become French teachers:

  • You must be enrolled in a bachelor of education program at a post-secondary institute in Canada.
  • If your courses are not in French, your teaching practicum must be done in French.

For those in all other programs:

  • You must be a Yukon high school graduate
  • You must be enrolled in at least one course taught in French. It may be a French language course, or a course taught in French.

You can’t receive both the post-secondary FSL and FFL bursaries for the same academic year.

Amount

$350 to $1200 annually per applicant. The amount is dependent on the number of:

  • French courses you’re enrolled in; and
  • applications we receive.

Deadline

September 30 for the academic year you are applying for.

How to apply

  1. Contact French Programs by email edu-french-programs@yukon.ca to confirm your eligibility.
  2. Complete the application form.
  3. Submit the completed form and all required documents listed on the form.

Please note that bursaries are taxable and if successful, you will be contacted for your Social Insurance Number (SIN) by the Government of Yukon. 

When will you find out about your application?

Applications are reviewed in October.

Successful applicants will be notified by the end of November. If you’re a successful applicant, we'll contact you by email to let you know how much you’ll receive.

How will I receive payment?

Send your banking information by submitting the Direct deposit authorization form and a void cheque by following the instructions on the form.

We’ll then deposit your bursary in your bank account. If you did not submit your Direct deposit authorization form, we'll send a cheque to your home address.

Report your bursary on your tax return

You must report the French as a Second Language (FSL) post-secondary bursary you received on your tax return. We’ll send a T4A to the permanent address you provide in your application.
