Statement from Premier Pillai on Nowruz

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“I am pleased to join with those in the Yukon who celebrate the joyous time of Nowruz, a time of renewal, hope and cherished traditions. Nowruz, steeped in over 3,000 years of history, symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and the arrival of spring brings with it a sense of rejuvenation and optimism.

Update on the Dawson City Ice Bridge

Unfortunately, due to unfavourable conditions, construction will not proceed on this year's ice bridge in Dawson City.

The decision to cancel the ice bridge construction this year was made following close monitoring of the river by the Department of Highways and Public Works and in consideration of public safety. Due to temperature fluctuations and an upstream ice jam, open water remained in the location of the planned bridge, preventing construction of the crossing.  

Government of Yukon congratulates Team Yukon for a successful Arctic Winter Games

The Government of Yukon congratulates all members of Team Yukon for representing the territory with honour and pride at the 2024 Arctic Winter Games in Mat-Su, Alaska.

Over 350 athletes, coaches, cultural delegates and support staff travelled to Alaska for the weeklong Games. Twenty sports were contested between March 10 to 16, which included cultural performances.

Team Yukon came back with 162 ulus putting them second in the medal count to Alaska. The team earned 59 gold, 45 silver and 58 bronze.

Statement from Minister McPhee on new community space in the Jim Smith building

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:


“Today marks a significant step forward in our Downtown Whitehorse Safety Response Plan.

“Starting today, the Jim Smith Building will host a new community space in the former cafeteria, extending a welcoming space to members of our community and providing access to crucial support services.

Public notice of break-in at Whitehorse Victim Services office

The Government of Yukon is reporting a break-in that occurred at the Whitehorse Victim Services office sometime between the evening of March 15 and the morning of March 16, 2024.

The Whitehorse detachment of RCMP “M” Division is investigating the break-in and the Department of Justice is following the appropriate procedures to respond to the privacy breach affecting confidential files that contain sensitive personal information.

Government of Yukon extends engagement period for Inclusive Yukon Families survey

The engagement for Inclusive Yukon Families has been extended to March 22, 2024, to allow Yukoners more time to respond to the online survey on inclusive parentage and naming.

This public engagement includes an in-person engagement (which will run beyond March 22, 2024) and an online survey that launched on February 22, 2024, and will now extend to March 22, 2024. Results from this engagement will help inform future amendments to the Children’s Law Act, Change of Name Act and Vital Statistics Act. This work will include:

One week until the temporary Whitehorse Public Library closure

Users of the Whitehorse Public Library are reminded that the library will be temporarily closed from March 25 to April 21, 2024, while the carpet is replaced. The carpet installation will make the library safer and a more inviting space for the community.

There will be no in-person services during the closure; however, online resources such as e-books, research materials, movies, TV shows, music and audiobooks will still be available.

Government of Yukon promotes diverse housing opportunities with opening of sale by tender of Whitehorse’s 2 Klondike Road

The Government of Yukon is committed to addressing the housing pressures that Yukoners are facing while also enhancing the wellbeing of communities across the territory. As part of this commitment, the Yukon government is announcing a development opportunity for 2 Klondike Road, formerly the Macaulay Lodge, located in Whitehorse’s Riverdale neighbourhood. The lot is now available for purchase through a tender process.

The Government of Yukon and West End Developments announce sale of 5th and Rogers

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and West End Developments.

The Government of Yukon has signed an agreement to sell the Whitehorse 5th and Rogers site to West End Developments to develop the parcel for residential and commercial use.

West End Developments has a vision for development that will revitalize an area of downtown Whitehorse largely unused since the mid-1960s. The project will be renamed Kèjän + Rogers, which reflects a collective reconciliation path forward.

Miscellaneous Statute Law Amendment Act, 2024 tabled

Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee introduced Bill No. 37 today, entitled the Miscellaneous Statute Law Amendment Act, 2024.

The Bill proposes amendments which will, if passed, ensure that 15 Yukon acts currently including typos, language errors or outdated names and references are corrected and up to date. These changes are minor and editorial in nature and they do not impact how the laws to be amended apply in practice.
