Statement from Minister McLean and Minister McPhee on supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ Yukoners

Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean and Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee have issued the following statement:

“Today, we saw many Yukoners join together and show their support for our youngest 2SLGBTQIA+ community members.

“To the Yukon’s transgender community, allies and advocates, we say ‘thank you'. Your dedication and unwavering care in protecting our communities’ rights to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the right to security and safety, is respected and deeply valued.

Work on Kêts’ádań Kų̀ in Burwash Landing moves forward as construction contract is awarded

In the Southern Tutchone language of Kluane First Nation, Kêts’ádań Kų̀ [Kay-et-zah Dun-COO] means “house of learning”. In the coming years, it will be the name of the new school in Burwash Landing, a project that has been long anticipated by the community. The Government of Yukon recently awarded the construction contract to build the school, which will replace the aging Kluane Lake School in Destruction Bay.

Senior leadership appointments in the Government of Yukon public service

Premier Ranj Pillai has made two senior leadership appointments.

Matt King has been appointed Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services. The dual Deputy Minister roles in Health and Social Services have been consolidated to enhance efficiency and optimize operations.

Damien Burns has been appointed as acting Deputy Minister of Community Services for a period of six months.

Both of these senior leadership appointments are effective September 20, 2024.

Statement from Minister Richard Mostyn on the new City of Whitehorse Recycling Program

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn has issued the following statement:

“Our government believes recycling is a crucial part of protecting the Yukon’s natural environment.

“Once Raven ReCentre decided to stop accepting non-refundable recyclable materials, Whitehorse residents faced a gap in recycling options before Extended Producer Responsibility regulations start in 2025. In light of this situation, the Yukon government felt it was important to ensure recycling continues in the Yukon’s largest municipality.

Government of Yukon welcomes public feedback on proposed amendments to the Air Emissions Regulations

Protecting air quality for Yukoners is a key priority in the Government of Yukon’s commitment to supporting a clean future. The Government of Yukon wants to hear from Yukoners on proposed amendments to the Air Emissions Regulations that would add commercial and institutional wood-based biomass burning systems as a permittable activity and help minimize the release of harmful air pollutants.

What We Heard report released on the Child Care Act review

The Government of Yukon has published a What We Heard report summarizing feedback from the review of the Child Care Act. This input will help modernize the new Act to help ensure it provides children with high quality, varied and nurturing learning experiences that support their growth and development. 

The engagement was guided by the four key principles of the Yukon’s Early Learning and Childcare Branch: quality, affordability, accessibility and inclusion. Some of the feedback we received from Yukoners during the public engagement included the following.

Seven U.S. companies to visit Whitehorse to explore economic opportunities as part of trade delegation

News release has been updated to include participating U.S. companies

United States Ambassador to Canada David L. Cohen will lead a trade delegation of seven U.S. businesses to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, from September 18 to 20.

Representatives from the U.S. businesses will meet with Yukon government officials, Yukon First Nation Development Corporations and local business owners to explore commercial and investment opportunities.
